Discovering Virtues through Poetry for Catholic Schools
Discovering Virtues through Poetry is a unique Language Arts
program designed to teach higher level reading skills and the seven virtues found in the Catholic Catechism. We use classic poetry to open both the heart and mind to receive God's Truth. The universal nature of poetry has the potential to penetrate the heart in a most unique way. Its dense language and rich imagery also help to promote a more active and analytical reading of the universal truths expressed. By connecting the heart with the mind, students will ascend to much higher levels of understanding than where the intellect alone can take them. We learn to accept God's absolute Truth as taught by the Catholic Church. Without this most critical step, the course merely becomes an academic exercise and a vain expression of ideas. With it, however, students will have experienced a deeper conversion of faith that will protect and strengthen them throughout their lives.
Looking to the Catholic Church as
the authority on all faith and moral issues, students are expected to apply the Magisterium to their lives. Inspired by St. John Paul II’s Man and Woman He
Created Them: A theology of the Body, we encourage students to grow in the
seven virtues: faith, hope, charity, prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude. It is our hope to inspire in each child a desire to build a culture of life that will ensure their happiness in both this life and in the next.
